SOOOO Ready To Go...

Or maybe not…. Okay, yes, I’m very ready to go. But at the same time I’m a little bit scared, nervous, anxious… okay you get the idea. Plus after the 12 days I spent in Traverse, I realized I have my own little paradise up there.

I suppose that apart of my anxiety comes from not really knowing what I’ll be doing while I’m there. Yes, I have a tentative idea- I’ll be in a community organization. I think mostly just helping with projects around the office there. The focus of the agency is more community organizing stuff. Not my area of expertise, but still good to have some knowledge of the other areas of Social Work. I have learned this year at my field placement that I’m pretty flexible when it comes to work ( I know some of you reading this don’t believe it, but my supervisor told me she was impressed with my flexibility!!!!).

Another source of my anxiety is the language barrier. I did take 2 years of Spanish in high school… and how quickly those lessons have escaped my memory. I am taking lessons right now with a woman through Skype- bless her soul. I’m sure she thinks to her self after every lesson, “This poor child doesn’t have a prayer!” I’m absolutely terrible. But I’m tying… I know that once I’m down there too, I will pick up a lot more. I’ve decided that my children will be learning Spanish at a young age. They don’t have a say. They will learn it and they will like it!

Enough of the complaining- I know this is a trip of a lifetime, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect, along with some of the other changes I’ve made in my life recently. I know that I am truly blessed to be able to go on this trip (especially because 2 grants came through that covered all but 1,000 of my trip!!!), and that this is what I’m meant to be doing with my summer. I have a lot to learn about the ways of the world, and I do hope that this trip is the first of many international travels I experience in my life. I consider myself a very strong person, and I’m excited for the challenge, to see what new strengths I can uncover while living, learning, and playing in the beauty of Costa Rica!!

Thanks for all your support .

This is what I have to look forward to!!!!

  3. Congratulations on the grants - that's amazing! It's such an incredible opportunity. I can't wait to hear all about it. Do you know what kind of internet access you'll have while you're there? My fingers are crossed that you'll be able to post lots of stories and photos. Good luck with the language!
